General Description of the Institution
Founded
in 1972, with four-years study programmes in Painting,
Sculpture, Decoration and Stage Designing, the Academy
of Fine Art of Macerata is one of the 20 Italian
academies. It awards first and second level degree
certificates in
“Visual and Performing Arts” with specialization
in Painting, Sculpture, Decoration, Stage Design,
Graphic Design, Preservation of the Cultural Heritage
and Multimedia Visual Communication.
Until
1997 the Academy was located in “Palazzo Buonaccorsi”, a
prestigious historical building which testifies to the
architectural late-baroque heritage of the region.
Nowadays
it is located in the town centre in an 18th century
Capuchins nunnery devoted to St. Vincent. The former
church, now a multifunctional space and a Great Hall, is
named after Josef Svoboda, the famous scenery designer
who worked in the town and especially for the Arena
Sferisterio.
Since
1998 the Academy has offered a wider range of
opportunities with the four-years study programmes in
“Theory and Practice in the Preservation of the
Cultural Heritage” and “Theory and Practice of
Multimedia Visual Communication”.
Since
2003 the institution has been working to conform to the
latest reform in the Italian education system thanks to
which Italian academies now have the same legal status
as universities. This reform has converted the
traditional undergraduate four-years study programme
into a three-years first level degree plus a two-years
second level degree.
The
Academy currently has about 700 student closely
supervised by 45 teachers and occasional experts.
Our
institution welcomed the LLP/Erasmus project in
1999 and today has several partners in Belgium,
Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Polland, Romania,
Spain, Great Britain and Hungary.

About Macerata
With
about 50.000 inhabitants Macerata is chief town in the
Marche region. It is located in the east side of central
Italy, about 1000 feet above the sea level and 12 miles
from the Adriatic coast. Its university centre has a
great tradition.
It is
not far from artistic towns like Assisi, Urbino and
Loreto and it is just 150 miles away from Bologna,
Firenze and Rome.
Though
the province of Macerata has considerably increased its
production in the last 50 years, no substantial changes
to the landscape can be noticed. The existing harmony
between nature and civilization, much appreciated from
an anthropological as well as a naturalistic point of
view, has not been altered.
These
are perfect conditions to enjoy the extraordinary
artistic heritage contained in this territory. It counts
unique works of art from different centuries going from
prehistory to the XXth century.
